Affogato is an easy, elegant Italian dessert made by pouring a shot of hot espresso over creamy gelato or ice cream. The contrast between hot and cold, bitter and sweet, makes this treat perfect for after dinner—or anytime you want a quick indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 small scoops vanilla gelato or ice cream

  • 1 shot (1 oz) hot espresso or strong brewed coffee

  • Optional: splash of coffee liqueur (e.g., Kahlúa, Amaretto, or Frangelico)

  • Optional toppings: shaved chocolate, cocoa powder, crushed biscotti, or whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Scoop Gelato:
Place two scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream into a small glass or dessert bowl.

  2. Pour Espresso:
Brew a fresh shot of espresso. Immediately pour it over the gelato.

  3. Add Extras (Optional):
Drizzle with liqueur or top with shaved chocolate or whipped cream for a fancy touch.

  4. Serve Immediately:
Serve right away with a spoon—and enjoy the melty, creamy goodness!

Notes

  • For a twist, try flavors like hazelnut, chocolate, or salted caramel ice cream.

  • No espresso machine? Use strong stovetop coffee (like moka pot) or very concentrated instant coffee.

  • Great for entertaining—minimal prep, maximum flavor.
