American Goulash is a simple, satisfying dish made with ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce. It’s a nostalgic, budget-friendly one-pot meal that’s full of flavor and ready in about 40 minutes.
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
1 (15 oz) can diced tomatoes (with juice)
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Sauté Aromatics:
In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
Brown the Beef:
Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat. Stir in salt, pepper, paprika, Italian seasoning, and tomato paste.
Build the Sauce:
Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and bring to a gentle boil.
Add Pasta:
Stir in elbow macaroni. Cover and simmer on medium-low for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender.
Finish and Serve:
Remove from heat. Stir in cheddar cheese if using. Let rest 5 minutes to thicken before serving.
Ground turkey works great as a leaner swap.
Add a splash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes for heat.
Leftovers reheat well and taste even better the next day!
