Amish onion fritters are crispy, golden bites filled with the sweet and savory flavors of caramelized onions. Easy to make, these fritters are a perfect appetizer, side dish, or snack that pairs beautifully with dips or served on their own.

Ingredients

Scale

For about 12 fritters

  • 2 medium onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for color and flavor)
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions:
    • Thinly slice the onions and separate them into rings or smaller pieces.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika (if using).
  3. Add the milk:
    • Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to create a thick batter.
  4. Combine onions and batter:
    • Add the onions to the batter and mix well to coat all the pieces evenly.
  5. Heat the oil:
    • Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the fritters:
    • Drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil, flattening them slightly with the back of the spoon. Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Drain the fritters:
    • Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce or as a side to a main meal.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add chopped herbs like parsley or dill to the batter.
  • These fritters are best enjoyed fresh but can be reheated in an oven for a crispier texture.
