A sweet and savory twist on the classic grilled cheese, this Apple and Cranberry Grilled Cheese combines tart cranberries, crisp apples, and melted cheese for a delightful sandwich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of whole grain bread
  • 1/2 apple, thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons dried cranberries
  • 2 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Butter one side of each bread slice.
  3. Place one slice of bread, butter side down, in the skillet.
  4. Layer with a slice of cheddar cheese, apple slices, dried cranberries, and the second slice of cheese.
  5. If using, drizzle honey over the apples for added sweetness.
  6. Top with the second slice of bread, butter side up.
  7. Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  8. Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniformly thin apple slices.
  • Try using brie or gouda for a different flavor profile.
  • For a crunchier texture, toast the bread slightly before assembling the sandwich.
