Ingredients
Scale
2 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 package (2 sheets) puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook for 5-7 minutes until apples are tender and sauce thickens slightly.
Stir in flour and cook for 1 more minute to thicken the mixture. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Roll out puff pastry sheets and cut each into 4 squares (8 total).
Place a spoonful of apple filling in the center of each square. Fold over into a triangle and press edges to seal with a fork.
Place turnovers on the baking sheet and brush with beaten egg.
Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
Cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar if desired before serving.
Notes
Use tart apples like Granny Smith for best flavor balance.
Turnovers can be made ahead and baked straight from the freezer.
Add a drizzle of icing for extra sweetness and presentation.
