Flaky, golden pastries filled with spiced apple filling—these apple turnovers are a quick and delicious treat perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a sweet snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 package (2 sheets) puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook for 5-7 minutes until apples are tender and sauce thickens slightly.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1 more minute to thicken the mixture. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Roll out puff pastry sheets and cut each into 4 squares (8 total).
  5. Place a spoonful of apple filling in the center of each square. Fold over into a triangle and press edges to seal with a fork.
  6. Place turnovers on the baking sheet and brush with beaten egg.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
  8. Cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar if desired before serving.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for best flavor balance.
  • Turnovers can be made ahead and baked straight from the freezer.
  • Add a drizzle of icing for extra sweetness and presentation.
