This hearty Beef Pasta in Tomato Sauce is a comforting one-pot meal that’s perfect for a family dinner. Made with tender ground beef, a flavorful tomato sauce, and perfectly cooked pasta, it’s a classic dish that’s simple and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz pasta (penne, rigatoni, or fusilli)
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean or regular)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (plus extra for serving)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Pasta:
    • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water, drain, and set aside.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned (about 5–7 minutes). Drain excess grease if needed.
  3. Sauté the Aromatics:
    • Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Make the Tomato Sauce:
    • Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Add the basil, oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Pour in the broth and stir to combine. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to let the flavors meld.
  5. Combine with Pasta:
    • Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the tomato sauce and toss to coat. If the sauce is too thick, stir in a splash of the reserved pasta water. Mix in the Parmesan cheese.
  6. Serve:
    • Divide the pasta among serving plates. Garnish with fresh parsley or basil and additional Parmesan cheese. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Use whole wheat or gluten-free pasta for a healthier option.
  • Add vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms for extra nutrients.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute red wine for part of the broth.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
