Ingredients
Scale
1 lb (450 g) ground breakfast sausage
6 large eggs
2 cups (480 ml) milk (whole milk or 2%)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
6 slices of bread, cubed (white, whole wheat, or French bread)
2 cups (200 g) shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup (25 g) shredded Parmesan cheese (optional)
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
Cook the sausage:
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the ground sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into small crumbles. Drain excess grease and set aside.
Prepare the egg mixture:
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Assemble the casserole:
Spread the cubed bread evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with the cooked sausage, followed by the shredded cheddar cheese.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage and cheese. Press down gently to ensure the bread soaks up the liquid.
Add the finishing touches:
Sprinkle the top with Parmesan cheese, if using.
Bake:
Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes, or until the casserole is set and the top is golden brown. Insert a knife in the center to check if it comes out clean.
Garnish and serve:
Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
Notes
Make-ahead option: Assemble the casserole the night before, cover, and refrigerate. Bake it fresh in the morning, adding 5-10 minutes to the cooking time.
