A juicy, flavorful homemade burger recipe made with simple seasonings and grilled or pan-seared to perfection. Customize with your favorite toppings for the ultimate burger night!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 4 burger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese (optional)
  • Butter or oil for toasting buns
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and condiments, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grates or pan.
  2. In a bowl, gently mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Do not overmix.
  3. Divide beef into 4 equal portions and shape into patties about 3/4-inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
  4. Grill or sear patties for about 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness (160°F internal temp for medium-well).
  5. Add cheese during the last minute of cooking, if using, and cover to melt.
  6. Toast burger buns with a little butter or oil until golden.
  7. Assemble burgers with your favorite toppings and condiments. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • 80/20 beef gives the juiciest results.
  • Do not press down on burgers while cooking — this squeezes out juices.
  • Rest burgers for a couple minutes before serving for maximum juiciness.
