Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (230 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (220 g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups (280 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (40 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (175 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/4 cups (200 g) Valentine’s Day M&Ms

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  1. Cream the Butter and Sugars:
    • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  2. Add the Eggs and Vanilla:
    • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Mix the Dough:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  5. Fold in the Chocolate Chips and M&Ms:
    • Reserve a handful of M&Ms for topping, then fold the rest into the dough along with the chocolate chips.

Shape and Chill the Dough:

  1. Form the Cookies:
    • Scoop large balls of dough (about 3 tablespoons each) and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Press a few of the reserved M&Ms onto the tops of the dough balls for a decorative finish.
  2. Chill:
    • Refrigerate the dough balls for at least 30 minutes to prevent spreading during baking.

Bake the Cookies:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bake:
    • Arrange the chilled dough balls on a lined baking sheet, leaving about 3 inches between each cookie. Bake for 12–14 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers look slightly soft.
  3. Cool:
    • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Storage: Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Custom M&Ms: Swap Valentine’s Day M&Ms for other seasonal or classic M&Ms to suit any occasion.
  • Extra Flavor: Add 1/2 teaspoon of espresso powder to the dry ingredients to enhance the chocolate flavor.
