Ingredients

Scale

For the casserole:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • 1 can (16 oz / 450 g) refrigerated biscuit dough (8 large biscuits)
  • 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
  2. Cook the sausage:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Make the gravy:
    • Sprinkle the cooked sausage with the flour and stir to coat evenly.
    • Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly, and cook until the gravy thickens (about 5 minutes).
    • Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes if desired. Remove from heat.
  4. Assemble the casserole:
    • Cut each biscuit into quarters and spread half of the biscuit pieces evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
    • Pour the sausage gravy over the biscuit layer.
    • Top with the remaining biscuit pieces, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
  5. Bake the casserole:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
    • If using cheese, sprinkle it on top during the last 5 minutes of baking to melt.
  6. Serve:
    • Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving. Slice into squares and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make it ahead: Prepare the sausage gravy and assemble the casserole the night before. Cover and refrigerate, then bake fresh in the morning.
  • For extra flavor, add diced onions or mushrooms to the sausage while cooking.
  • Serve with scrambled eggs or fresh fruit on the side for a complete breakfast.
