This Black Bean Burger Recipe is a delicious and hearty vegetarian option made with black beans, vegetables, and spices. It’s easy to make, packed with flavor, and perfect for grilling or pan-frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for cooking)
  • Burger buns and desired toppings (lettuce, tomato, avocado, etc.)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining.
  2. Add breadcrumbs, red onion, cilantro, egg, garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  3. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
  4. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and heated through.
  5. Serve on burger buns with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Make it vegan by using a flax egg (1 tablespoon flaxseed meal + 3 tablespoons water).
  • Can be baked at 375°F for 10–12 minutes per side instead of pan-fried.
  • Refrigerate patties for 30 minutes before cooking to help them hold shape better.
