Ingredients

Scale

For the Onion Petals:

  • 1 large sweet onion (Vidalia or yellow)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

1. Prepare the Onion Petals:

  • Peel the onion and cut it into 1-inch petals. Separate the layers and set aside.

2. Make the Coating:

  • In a large bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg until well combined.

3. Coat the Onion Petals:

  • Dip each onion petal in the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and back into the flour mixture for a double coating.
  • Place the coated petals on a plate and let them sit for a few minutes to help the coating adhere.

4. Heat the Oil:

  • Heat 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or skillet to 180°C (350°F).

5. Fry the Onion Petals:

  • Fry the onion petals in batches for 2-3 minutes, until golden and crispy.
  • Avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried petals to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

6. Prepare the Dipping Sauce:

  • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix until smooth and adjust seasoning to taste.

7. Serve:

  • Serve the hot onion petals with the dipping sauce on the side. Enjoy while crispy!

Notes

  • For an extra kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dipping sauce.
  • These are best served fresh, but you can reheat them in an oven or air fryer to maintain their crispiness.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice and let sit for 5 minutes.
