Ingredients

Scale

For the casserole:

  • 1 loaf (about 1 lb / 450 g) of French bread or brioche, cubed
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, cut into small cubes
  • 2 cups (300 g) fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480 ml) milk
  • ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the streusel topping:

  • ½ cup (65 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup (60 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the casserole base:
    • Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.
    • Spread half of the bread cubes evenly in the dish. Scatter the cream cheese cubes and 1 cup of blueberries over the bread. Top with the remaining bread cubes and blueberries.
  2. Make the custard:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure all the bread is soaked. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
  3. Prepare the streusel topping:
    • In a medium bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter with a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  4. Bake the casserole:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
    • Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the casserole. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  5. Serve:
    • Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup or a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.

Notes

  • Substitute blueberries with raspberries or mixed berries for variety.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
