This Caramel Apple French Toast is the perfect balance of soft, custardy bread, sweet caramel sauce, and tender cinnamon-spiced apples. It’s a delightful breakfast or brunch dish that feels like dessert!

Ingredients

Scale

For the apple topping:

  • 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • ½ cup (120 ml) caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

For the French toast:

  • 6 slices of thick bread (brioche or challah works best)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for frying)

Instructions

  • Prepare the caramel apple topping:
    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the apple slices, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and caramelized.
    • Stir in the caramel sauce and cook for 1-2 more minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Prepare the French toast mixture:
    • In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
  • Cook the French toast:
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated.
    • Place the dipped bread onto the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter as needed.
  • Assemble and serve:
    • Place the cooked French toast slices on plates and spoon the caramel apple topping over each slice. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra indulgence, top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • You can use any apple variety, but Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work particularly well.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated in a skillet or microwave.
