This Cheese Sauce for Fries is creamy, gooey, and perfectly cheesy with a little kick of flavor. It’s made from simple ingredients and comes together in minutes — way better than anything from a can or jar. Pour it over hot fries for the ultimate comfort food snack!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2% works best)

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika or smoked paprika

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • Optional: 1–2 teaspoons hot sauce or Dijon mustard for extra flavor

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

  • Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to make a smooth roux.

  • Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Cook for 2–3 minutes, until the mixture starts to thicken.

  • Reduce heat to low and stir in shredded cheese, garlic powder, paprika, and optional seasonings.

  • Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy.

  • Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed.

  • Serve immediately over hot fries or keep warm on low heat, stirring occasionally.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, shred your own cheese — pre-shredded cheese can make it grainy.

  • You can swap cheddar for a mix of cheeses like mozzarella, pepper jack, or Gruyère.

  • To reheat, warm gently with a splash of milk to loosen the sauce.
