This Cheesy Christmas Tree Bread is a fun and festive appetizer perfect for holiday gatherings. Shaped like a Christmas tree, these soft, pull-apart rolls are filled with gooey cheese and brushed with garlic butter for irresistible flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (7 g or 2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 250 ml (1 cup) warm milk
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) warm water
  • 60 g (4 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 200 g (7 oz) mozzarella cheese, cubed

For the garlic butter topping:

  • 60 g (4 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Prepare the dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and beaten egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

2. Shape the tree

  1. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into about 20–25 pieces.
  2. Flatten each piece of dough slightly and place a cube of mozzarella in the center. Pinch the dough around the cheese to seal, forming a ball.
  3. Arrange the dough balls seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet in the shape of a Christmas tree (one ball at the top, rows below increasing in size, and a trunk at the bottom). Leave a small gap between the balls to allow for rising.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise again for 20–30 minutes.

3. Bake the bread

  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).
  2. Bake the bread for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.

4. Prepare the garlic butter

  1. While the bread is baking, melt the butter in a small pan or microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and chopped parsley.

5. Finish and serve

  1. Brush the warm bread with the garlic butter, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  2. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
  3. Serve warm, and let your guests pull apart the rolls to enjoy the cheesy goodness.

Notes

  • Cheese options: Try filling the bread with cheddar, Gouda, or cream cheese for variety.
  • Dip pairing: Serve with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or a honey-mustard dip for extra flavor.
  • Make-ahead option: Assemble the tree and refrigerate overnight. Let it rise at room temperature before baking.
