Ingredients

Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 4 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cubed
  • 1 ½ cups diced ham
  • 68 slices Swiss cheese

For the Sauce:

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Layer the Casserole:
Spread the cooked chicken evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the diced ham over the chicken. Lay the Swiss cheese slices on top of the ham, ensuring full coverage.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk and chicken broth until smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes, until thickened. Stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Pour the Sauce:
Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the casserole, ensuring it covers all the layers.
  5. Prepare the Topping:
In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, melted butter, and grated Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the casserole.
  6. Bake:
Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling.
  7. Serve:
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve hot with a side of green beans, a fresh salad, or mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • Chicken Substitute: Rotisserie chicken works perfectly for this recipe to save time.
  • Cheese Options: Swap Swiss cheese with provolone or mozzarella for a milder flavor.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble the casserole up to 24 hours in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Bake as directed when ready.
