Chinese Hot Mustard is a bold and spicy condiment made from dry mustard powder and water. It delivers a sharp, sinus-clearing heat and is commonly served with egg rolls, dumplings, and other Chinese appetizers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup dry mustard powder
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/8 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp rice vinegar or white vinegar (optional, for balance)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together mustard powder and cold water until smooth and lump-free.
  2. Let sit uncovered at room temperature for 10–15 minutes to develop heat.
  3. Add salt and vinegar if using, and stir well.
  4. Serve immediately for best potency. Refrigeration will mellow the spiciness over time.

Notes

  • For maximum heat, do not prepare in advance. Use cold water and serve fresh.
  • Pairs well with egg rolls, wontons, dumplings, and roasted meats.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week, though heat will fade.
