Ingredients
Scale
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 large egg yolks
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tablespoon grated orange zest
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, egg yolks, cornstarch, and salt until smooth and pale.
Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and coats the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes).
Remove from heat and stir in orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract.
Pour the custard through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl to remove any lumps.
Cover the surface with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming and refrigerate for at least 2 hours until chilled.
Serve in individual cups topped with whipped cream or fresh orange slices if desired.
Notes
Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavor.
Strain the custard for a perfectly smooth texture.
Custard will keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
