Ingredients

Scale

For the Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Steaks:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 6-8 oval patties.
  • Brown the Patties (Optional):
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the patties on each side for 2-3 minutes until browned. This step is optional but enhances the flavor.
  • Assemble in the Crockpot:
    • Place the sliced onions and mushrooms in the bottom of the crockpot.
    • Arrange the patties on top of the vegetables.
  • Prepare the Gravy:
    • In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Pour the mixture over the patties.
  • Cook:
    • Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or high for 3-4 hours, until the patties are tender and cooked through.
  • Thicken the Gravy:
    • In the last 30 minutes of cooking, stir in the cornstarch slurry to thicken the gravy. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  • Serve:
    • Serve the Salisbury steak with the rich gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For added flavor, try using a mix of ground beef and pork.
  • If you like a stronger gravy, add 1/2 tsp of dried thyme or rosemary to the sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
