Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 1/2 cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture is frothy.
  2. Make the Dough:
    • Add the remaining sugar, egg, melted butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Let the Dough Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
    • In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Place the melted butter in a separate bowl.
  5. Shape the Twists:
    • Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 12×10 inches.
    • Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide. Fold each strip in half lengthwise and twist several times to create a spiral shape.
  6. Coat and Bake:
    • Dip each twist into the melted butter, then roll it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place the twists on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Cover loosely with a towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes while preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    • Serve the cinnamon twists warm, optionally drizzled with glaze (see notes) or alongside a hot cup of coffee or tea.
    • Optional Glaze:

      • Mix 1/2 cup (60 g) powdered sugar with 1-2 tablespoons milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Drizzle over the warm twists for extra sweetness.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Prepare the dough the night before and let it rise in the refrigerator overnight. Bring it to room temperature before shaping.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for 10-15 seconds for a fresh-out-of-the-oven feel.
