Ingredients

Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 1 loaf (about 1 lb) French bread, cubed (or brioche, challah)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (55 g) brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup (100 g) brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Optional Garnishes:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup
  • Fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dish:
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the cubed bread evenly in the dish.
  2. Make the Custard:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until fully combined.
    • Pour the custard evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Make the Topping:
    • In a medium bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter using a fork or your fingers until crumbly. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the casserole.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set.
  6. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with powdered sugar, serve with maple syrup, and enjoy!

Notes

  • For added flavor, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the topping before baking.
  • If you prefer a firmer texture, use day-old bread for better absorption.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
