A quick and classic recipe for French toast made with simple pantry ingredients—perfect for a delicious breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of bread (preferably slightly stale)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp butter (for cooking)
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the butter.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides well.
  4. Place the coated bread slices on the hot skillet and cook until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  5. Remove from skillet and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Use thick-cut bread like brioche or challah for best results.
  • Let bread soak briefly in the egg mixture if it’s very dry or thick.
  • Add a splash of orange zest or almond extract for flavor variation.
  • French toast can be kept warm in a 200°F oven until ready to serve.
  • Make it dairy-free with plant-based milk and oil instead of butter.
