These classic sugar cookies are soft, buttery, and sweet with crisp edges and chewy centers. No chilling required—just mix, scoop, and bake! Great for last-minute treats, cookie swaps, or decorating with icing and sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1½ cups granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. Cream Butter & Sugar:
In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar with a hand mixer until light and fluffy (about 2–3 minutes).

  3. Add Egg & Vanilla:
Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

  4. Combine Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. Scoop Dough:
Drop rounded tablespoons (or use a cookie scoop) onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.

  6. Bake:
Bake for 8–10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Centers may look slightly soft—that’s perfect!

  7. Cool:
Let cookies rest on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a festive touch, roll dough balls in colored sugar or top with sprinkles before baking.

  • Want crispier cookies? Add 1–2 minutes to the baking time.

  • These cookies freeze well baked or unbaked—just scoop and freeze the dough balls on a tray, then store in a freezer bag.
