This Eggnog French Toast is a holiday twist on the classic breakfast favorite. Thick slices of bread are soaked in a creamy eggnog custard, then cooked to golden perfection. It’s festive, indulgent, and perfect for a Christmas morning treat or any cozy winter brunch!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240 ml) eggnog (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 8 slices of thick-cut bread (such as brioche, challah, or Texas toast)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) unsalted butter, for cooking

Optional toppings:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard:
    • In a large shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth and well combined.
  2. Soak the bread:
    • Place a slice of bread in the custard mixture and let it soak for 20-30 seconds per side. Repeat with all slices.
  3. Cook the French toast:
    • Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter. Once melted, place the soaked bread slices in the pan (work in batches if necessary).
    • Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Keep warm:
    • Transfer cooked French toast to a plate and cover loosely with foil to keep warm while you cook the remaining slices.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve warm with your favorite toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, whipped cream, or fresh berries.

Notes

  • Bread choice: Day-old or slightly stale bread works best, as it absorbs the custard without becoming too soggy.
  • Extra eggnog flavor: For a stronger eggnog flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon rum extract or a splash of spiced rum to the custard.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven for the best texture.
