Ingredients

Scale

For the apple rings:

  • 3 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the coating:

  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples:
    • Peel the apples (optional) and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
    • Use a small round cutter or a paring knife to remove the cores from each apple slice, creating a ring shape.
  2. Make the batter:
    • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cinnamon.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and milk. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until a smooth batter forms.
  3. Heat the oil:
    • Pour about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or saucepan. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  4. Fry the apple rings:
    • Dip each apple ring into the batter, letting the excess drip off. Carefully lower the coated apple ring into the hot oil.
    • Fry 2–3 rings at a time, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides (about 2 minutes per side).
    • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried apple rings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
  5. Coat with cinnamon sugar:
    • In a shallow bowl or plate, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon for the coating.
    • While the apple rings are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.
  6. Serve and enjoy:
    • Serve the apple rings warm with caramel sauce, whipped cream, or vanilla ice cream for dipping.

Notes

  • Apple variety: Granny Smith apples add a tart flavor, while Honeycrisp or Fuji apples are sweeter.
  • Make-ahead tip: Prep the apple slices in advance and keep them in cold water with a splash of lemon juice to prevent browning. Pat dry before dipping in the batter.
  • Air fryer option: Fry the batter-coated rings at 375°F (190°C) in an air fryer for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
