Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic Southern dish made by coating firm, unripe tomatoes in a seasoned cornmeal or breadcrumb mixture and frying until golden and crispy. They’re a tangy, savory appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium green tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional for extra crunch)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle tomato slices with salt and let sit for 10 minutes. Pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Set up a breading station: place flour in one shallow dish. In another, whisk eggs and buttermilk. In a third, mix cornmeal, breadcrumbs (if using), pepper, and paprika.
  3. Dredge each tomato slice in flour, dip in the egg mixture, then coat with the cornmeal mixture.
  4. Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry tomatoes in batches until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
  6. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Notes

  • Serve with ranch dressing, remoulade, or a spicy aioli for dipping.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
  • Use firm, fully green tomatoes for best results.
  • Keep fried slices warm in a 200°F oven if frying in batches.
