Ingredients

Scale

For the rolls:

  • 500 g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (7 g or 2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 250 ml (1 cup) warm milk
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) warm water
  • 60 g (4 tbsp) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

For the garlic butter topping:

  • 60 g (4 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

1. Prepare the dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, softened butter, and beaten egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

2. Shape the rolls

  1. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a ball and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray, spacing them slightly apart.
  3. Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes.

3. Preheat the oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).

4. Prepare the garlic butter

  1. In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and parsley.

5. Bake and brush

  1. Brush the risen rolls generously with half of the garlic butter.
  2. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  3. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with the remaining garlic butter.
  4. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.

6. Serve

  • Serve warm, and enjoy these rolls with your favorite pasta, soup, or as a standalone treat.

Notes

  • Make-Ahead: The dough can be prepared and refrigerated overnight. Let it come to room temperature before shaping and baking.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the oven before serving.
  • Variation: Add shredded mozzarella cheese inside each roll for a cheesy garlic bread surprise!
