This Georgia Mustard Barbecue Sauce, also known as “Carolina Gold,” is a tangy and slightly sweet sauce made with yellow mustard, vinegar, honey, and spices. Unlike traditional tomato-based barbecue sauces, this mustard-based version is a Southern classic that pairs perfectly with smoked meats, grilled chicken, and pulled pork sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup yellow mustard
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup honey (or brown sugar)
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together mustard, apple cider vinegar, honey, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce (if using).
  2. Add spices: Stir in smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Simmer: Place the saucepan over low heat and let the sauce simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until well combined and slightly thickened.
  4. Cool and store: Remove from heat and let cool. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  5. Serve: Use as a basting sauce, dipping sauce, or drizzle over pulled pork, ribs, or grilled chicken.

Notes

  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less honey.
  • Add cayenne pepper or extra hot sauce for a spicier version.
  • This sauce thickens as it cools—reheat gently before serving if needed.
