Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 full sheets of graham crackers (enough to cover a 9×13-inch pan)
  • 1 cup (230 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200 g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (175 g) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) chopped nuts (pecans, almonds, or walnuts; optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper or aluminum foil, ensuring the edges extend over the sides for easy removal.
  2. Arrange the graham crackers:
    • Place the graham crackers in a single layer in the prepared baking dish, covering the bottom completely.
  3. Make the toffee layer:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until fully dissolved. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens slightly.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Pour the toffee over the crackers:
    • Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture over the graham crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula to cover all the crackers.
  5. Bake the toffee bars:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling. Remove from the oven.
  6. Add the chocolate:
    • Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee layer. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes to melt, then use a spatula to spread the chocolate evenly over the toffee.
  7. Add toppings (optional):
    • Sprinkle chopped nuts over the melted chocolate, pressing them gently into the surface.
  8. Cool and set:
    • Allow the bars to cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for 1-2 hours until the chocolate is firm and the toffee is set.
  9. Cut and serve:
    • Once chilled, lift the bars out of the pan using the parchment paper or foil edges. Cut into squares or rectangles and serve.
