Ingredients

Scale

For the beef and gravy:

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for richness)

For the mashed potatoes:

  • 2 pounds (900 g) potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russets)
  • 1/4 cup (60 g) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) milk (or more, as needed)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mashed potatoes:
    • Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks. Place them in a large pot, cover with water, and add a pinch of salt.
    • Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain and return them to the pot.
    • Mash the potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed. Cover and set aside.
  2. Cook the ground beef:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned and crumbled. Drain excess fat if necessary.
    • Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes, until softened and fragrant.
  3. Make the gravy:
    • Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
    • Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring, ensuring no lumps form.
    • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), onion powder, paprika, and butter. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  4. Assemble the dish:
    • Spoon the mashed potatoes onto plates or bowls. Ladle the ground beef and gravy mixture over the top.
  5. Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped parsley or a sprinkle of paprika, if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For added flavor, mix in sautéed mushrooms or peas with the ground beef.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the microwave or on the stovetop.
  • If you prefer a smoother gravy, blend the onion and garlic into the broth before adding it to the beef.
