This hearty ground beef pasta sauce is a classic, savory tomato-based sauce loaded with flavor and perfect for pairing with your favorite pasta. Easy to make and great for meal prep or freezing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add onion and sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened, then add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, then add crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Stir in Parmesan cheese if using, and adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. Serve over cooked pasta and garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • For extra depth, add a splash of red wine or a bay leaf while simmering.
  • Great for freezing—cool completely and store in airtight containers.
  • Use lean ground beef or substitute with ground turkey for a lighter version.
