Ingredients

Scale

For the Brownies:

  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup (40 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (65 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional Add-ins:

  • 1/2 cup (90 g) chocolate chips or chunks
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) chopped nuts

For Garnish (Optional):

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Melted chocolate for drizzling
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

Prepare the Brownie Batter:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×9-inch (23×23 cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and whisk until combined.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, sift together the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Mix the Batter:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid overmixing. If using chocolate chips or nuts, fold them in now.

Bake the Brownies:

  1. Bake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
    • Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting.

Cut into Heart Shapes:

  1. Shape the Brownies:
    • Once cooled, carefully lift the brownies out of the pan using the parchment overhang. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes.
  2. Reuse Scraps:
    • Save the brownie scraps for snacking, crumbling over ice cream, or making brownie parfaits.

Decorate (Optional):

  1. Add Finishing Touches:
    • Dust the brownie hearts with powdered sugar, drizzle with melted chocolate, or top with sprinkles for a festive touch.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: Bake the brownies a day in advance and cut them into hearts just before serving.
  • Heart Shape Alternative: If you don’t have a heart-shaped cutter, trace a heart template on parchment paper, cut it out, and use it as a guide to hand-cut the brownies with a knife.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
