Homemade Buttermilk Syrup is a rich, creamy syrup with a buttery caramel flavor that’s perfect over pancakes, waffles, or French toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the sugar, buttermilk, and baking soda. Stir to combine.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring frequently. The mixture will foam up due to the baking soda.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Let cool slightly before serving. Syrup will thicken as it cools.

Notes

  • Use a large pot to prevent overflow from foaming.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator and reheat gently before using.
  • For a deeper flavor, try using brown sugar instead of white sugar.
