Homemade Teriyaki Sauce is a sweet and savory Japanese-style glaze made with soy sauce, sugar, and garlic, perfect for marinating, glazing, or dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water (for slurry)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, 1/4 cup water, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Stir well.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  3. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons cold water to make a slurry.
  4. Slowly whisk the slurry into the sauce and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce.
  • Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Use as a marinade for meats, glaze for grilled dishes, or a dipping sauce for dumplings and sushi.
