A basic guide to cooking perfect rice on the stovetop, resulting in fluffy, tender grains every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water in a fine mesh strainer until the water runs clear.
  2. In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
  3. Add the rice, salt, and butter or oil if using.
  4. Stir once, then reduce heat to low and cover with a tight-fitting lid.
  5. Simmer for 18–20 minutes without lifting the lid, until water is fully absorbed.
  6. Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
  7. Fluff with a fork and serve.

Notes

  • Adjust water-to-rice ratio depending on rice type (e.g., 1:1.5 for jasmine or basmati).
  • Use broth instead of water for added flavor.
  • Rinsing removes excess starch for fluffier rice.
