Indian Frybread is a traditional Native American dish that’s soft, fluffy, and slightly crispy on the outside. This versatile bread can be enjoyed as a savory base for tacos or sweetened with honey or powdered sugar for a delicious treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) warm water or milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For sweet toppings (optional):

  • Honey
  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar

For savory toppings (optional):

  • Cooked ground beef or shredded chicken
  • Lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese
  • Salsa or sour cream

Instructions

Step 1: Make the dough

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Gradually add the warm water or milk, mixing with a fork or your hands until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough gently on a lightly floured surface for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
  4. Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Shape the frybread

  1. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions.
  2. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a disk about 1/4-inch (0.6 cm) thick. Make a small slit in the center of each disk to prevent puffing during frying.

Step 3: Fry the bread

  1. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Carefully place one piece of dough into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and puffy.
  3. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Step 4: Serve

  1. For sweet frybread, drizzle with honey or sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.
  2. For savory frybread, top with your favorite taco ingredients.

Notes

  • Storage: Frybread is best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or air fryer for a crisp texture.
  • Additions: You can mix 1 tablespoon of sugar into the dough for a slightly sweeter bread if serving as a dessert.
