These Jalapeño-Onion Smash Burgers are packed with bold, spicy flavor and caramelized goodness. Perfectly seared ground beef patties are smashed onto the griddle with jalapeños and onions for a crispy, juicy, and mouthwatering burger experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced jalapeños (fresh or pickled)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 burger buns, toasted
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil for cooking
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayo, ketchup

Instructions

  1. Preheat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and lightly grease with butter or oil.
  2. Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into loose balls (do not overwork).
  3. Place sliced onions and jalapeños in small piles on the skillet and top each with a ball of beef.
  4. Smash each beef ball flat with a spatula, pressing it into the onions and jalapeños. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the edges are crispy and the onions/jalapeños are caramelized.
  6. Flip the patties, add a slice of cheese on each, and cook another 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted and patties are cooked through.
  7. Assemble burgers on toasted buns with desired toppings.
  8. Serve immediately while hot and juicy.

Notes

  • Use a heavy spatula or burger press to get a good sear.
  • Pickled jalapeños add tang while fresh bring more heat — choose based on your spice level preference.
  • Double up on patties for a more indulgent burger.
