A classic homemade marinara sauce made with ripe tomatoes, garlic, herbs, and olive oil — perfect for pasta, pizza, or dipping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp fresh chopped parsley or basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes until translucent.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir in oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), sugar (if using), salt, and pepper.
  4. Bring to a gentle simmer, reduce heat to low, and cook uncovered for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning. Stir in fresh herbs if desired.
  6. Use immediately or cool and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to puree it to your desired consistency.
  • Add a splash of red wine for extra depth of flavor.
  • This sauce freezes well for up to 3 months.
