This old-fashioned cinnamon apple crisp is the perfect cozy dessert. Sweet, tender apples are topped with a buttery, cinnamon-spiced crumble, creating a comforting treat best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale

For the apple filling:

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/3 cup (65 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup (65 g) light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

For the crumble topping:

  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (100 g) old-fashioned oats
  • 2/3 cup (135 g) light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch (or similar-sized) baking dish.
  2. Prepare the apple filling:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), lemon juice, and flour. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
    • Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Make the crumble topping:
    • In a separate bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in the melted butter until the mixture forms a crumbly texture.
  4. Assemble and bake:
    • Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  5. Cool and serve:
    • Let the crisp cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

  • For added crunch, mix 1/2 cup (60 g) of chopped nuts, such as pecans or walnuts, into the crumble topping.
  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven to maintain the crisp texture.
