Ingredients

Scale

  • For the Filling:
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 pound lean ground beef
    • 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
    • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • For the Batter:
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 cup whole buttermilk, at room temperature
    • 1 tablespoon salted butter, melted
    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Topping:
    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional Garnishes:
    • Pickle slices
    • Ketchup
    • Burger sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Prepare Filling:
    • In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil.
    • Add ground beef, chopped onion, and kosher salt. Cook until the beef is browned and the onions are soft, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
    • Stir in Worcestershire sauce and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
    • Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared pie plate, spreading it evenly.
  • Prepare Batter:
    • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter until smooth.
    • Add flour and baking powder to the wet mixture. Whisk until well combined and smooth.
  • Assemble Pie:
    • Pour the batter over the beef mixture in the pie plate, ensuring it covers the filling evenly.
    • Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top.
  • Bake:
    • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for about 25 minutes, or until the top is browned and the center is set.
    • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing.
  • Serve:
    • Serve warm, garnished with pickle slices, ketchup, and burger sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, consider adding chopped jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture.
  • To prevent the pie from becoming soggy, ensure the ground beef is well-drained before adding it to the pie plate.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes, or until warmed through.
