This root beer BBQ sauce is sweet, tangy, and perfectly smoky with a nostalgic twist. Made with real root beer, ketchup, and spices, it’s a flavorful glaze or dip for ribs, pulled pork, burgers, and grilled chicken. It’s easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup root beer (not diet)

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon molasses

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together all ingredients over medium heat.

  2. Simmer: Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.

  3. Cool & store: Let cool, then transfer to a jar or bottle. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

  • Use a bold, full-sugar root beer for the best flavor—avoid diet or low-cal versions.

  • Great as a glaze during the last few minutes of grilling or smoking.

  • Sauce will thicken more as it cools.
