This root beer BBQ sauce is sweet, tangy, and perfectly smoky with a nostalgic twist. Made with real root beer, ketchup, and spices, it’s a flavorful glaze or dip for ribs, pulled pork, burgers, and grilled chicken. It’s easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser!
1 cup root beer (not diet)
1 cup ketchup
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon black pepper
¼ teaspoon salt
Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
Combine ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together all ingredients over medium heat.
Simmer: Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
Cool & store: Let cool, then transfer to a jar or bottle. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Use a bold, full-sugar root beer for the best flavor—avoid diet or low-cal versions.
Great as a glaze during the last few minutes of grilling or smoking.
Sauce will thicken more as it cools.
