Saltine Cracker Toffee, also known as “Christmas Crack,” is an irresistible treat made with layers of crispy saltine crackers, buttery toffee, and melted chocolate. Quick to prepare and perfect for the holidays, it’s a sweet, salty, and crunchy delight!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (200g) brown sugar, packed
  • 2 cups (340g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: chopped nuts (pecans, almonds, or walnuts), sprinkles, or crushed candy canes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking sheet:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Line a rimmed baking sheet (10×15 inches) with aluminum foil or parchment paper, ensuring it covers the sides. Lightly grease the foil or paper.
    • Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet, touching but not overlapping.
  2. Make the toffee layer:
    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
    • Allow the mixture to boil for 3 minutes without stirring. Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading gently with a spatula if needed.
  3. Bake the toffee:
    • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling.
  4. Add the chocolate layer:
    • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes to melt.
    • Use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate into an even layer.
  5. Add toppings (optional):
    • Sprinkle chopped nuts, crushed candy canes, or festive sprinkles over the melted chocolate.
  6. Cool and set:
    • Let the toffee cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for 1-2 hours, or until fully set.
  7. Break into pieces:
    • Once hardened, remove the toffee from the pan and break it into irregular pieces.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • For a darker flavor, use dark chocolate chips or bittersweet chocolate instead of semi-sweet.
  • Saltine crackers can be substituted with Ritz crackers for a buttery twist.
