School Pizza is a nostalgic, rectangular slice of soft and cheesy pizza served in school cafeterias, often topped with ground beef or sausage and a classic tomato sauce. It’s a beloved comfort food with a fluffy crust and simple toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (1/4 oz) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup cooked ground beef or sausage (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in flour, salt, and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
  5. Press dough into the pan, stretching to the edges. Let rest for 10 minutes.
  6. Spread pizza sauce evenly over the dough. Add meat (if using), then sprinkle with mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  7. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning if desired.
  8. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Cool slightly before slicing into squares and serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of mozzarella and cheddar for that classic school pizza flavor.
  • Customize toppings with pepperoni, veggies, or leave plain cheese-style.
  • For a quicker version, use pre-made pizza dough or crust.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven or air fryer.
