Sicilian Sausage Rolls are savory pastries filled with seasoned Italian sausage, cheese, and herbs, wrapped in a golden, flaky dough. Perfect as appetizers or snacks, these rolls are bursting with bold Sicilian flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (casings removed)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup grated Pecorino Romano or Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook, breaking it apart, until browned and cooked through.
  3. Add onion and garlic and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in parsley, fennel seeds, red pepper flakes, and cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture cool slightly.
  5. Roll out puff pastry on a floured surface and cut into 3-4 rectangles, depending on desired roll size.
  6. Spoon the sausage mixture along one edge of each rectangle and roll tightly, sealing the edge with a bit of water. Place seam-side down on baking sheet.
  7. Brush the tops with beaten egg and make small slits for steam to escape.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and puffed.
  9. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Can be served warm or at room temperature.
  • Perfect for parties, game day, or antipasto platters.
  • Substitute puff pastry with pizza dough for a more rustic version.
