Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) sloppy joe sauce (like Manwich) or homemade sloppy joe sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for a little kick)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)
  • 1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuits, or 1 bag frozen tater tots (for the topping)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley or green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the Beef Mixture:

    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, onion, and bell pepper until the beef is browned and vegetables are softened (about 5-7 minutes).
    • Drain any excess grease.
    • Add garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
    • Stir in sloppy joe sauce, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3-5 minutes.
  3. Assemble the Casserole:

    • Pour the sloppy joe mixture into the prepared baking dish.
    • Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
    • Arrange biscuits or frozen tater tots over the cheese layer in an even pattern.
  4. Bake:

    • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown or the tater tots are crispy and cooked through.
    • Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
  5. Serve:

    • Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions and serve warm.

Notes

  • Swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Add 1 cup of corn or black beans for extra texture and flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
