Smoked BBQ Chicken is tender, juicy chicken infused with rich smoky flavor and coated in a sticky, sweet, and tangy barbecue sauce—perfect for backyard cookouts and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken quarters (or thighs and drumsticks)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp BBQ dry rub
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • Wood chips for smoking (hickory or applewood recommended)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your smoker to 250°F (120°C) and add wood chips for smoke.
  2. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Rub with olive oil and season generously with BBQ dry rub, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place chicken in the smoker, skin-side up, and close the lid.
  4. Smoke the chicken for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  5. Brush BBQ sauce over the chicken during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  6. For a crispier skin, increase the heat to 300°F (150°C) for the last 10 minutes or finish on a hot grill for a few minutes per side.
  7. Let the chicken rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a meat thermometer for best results to avoid overcooking.
  • You can marinate the chicken overnight in BBQ rub for extra flavor.
  • Leftovers make great sandwiches or salads.
