These Southern Baked Beans are rich, flavorful, and loaded with smoky bacon, sweet brown sugar, tangy mustard, and a hint of spice. Slow-baked until thick and caramelized, they’re the perfect side dish for any BBQ, picnic, or family gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped

  • 1 small onion, finely diced

  • 2 (15 oz) cans pork and beans (do not drain)

  • ½ cup ketchup

  • ¼ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large skillet, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

  3. In the same skillet with a bit of bacon drippings, sauté the diced onion until soft and lightly golden, about 5 minutes.

  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine pork and beans, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire, vinegar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, sautéed onions, and most of the cooked bacon (save a little for topping).

  5. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or oven-safe casserole dish.

  6. Sprinkle the remaining bacon on top.

  7. Bake uncovered for 45–60 minutes, or until the sauce is thick and bubbly and the top is slightly caramelized.

Notes

  • Want it smoky? Add a few dashes of liquid smoke or use hickory-smoked bacon.

  • These can be made ahead and reheated — they taste even better the next day!

  • For a meatless version, skip the bacon and sauté the onion in olive oil.
