Classic spritz cookies are buttery, crisp, and perfect for the holidays. These delicate cookies are shaped with a cookie press into festive designs and can be decorated with colored sugars or sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Decorative sugar or sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Do not grease baking sheets.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using). Mix well.
  4. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Fill a cookie press with the dough and press shapes onto ungreased baking sheets.
  6. Decorate with colored sugar or sprinkles, if desired.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are just beginning to turn golden.
  8. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

  • Do not chill the dough, as it needs to be soft for pressing.
  • Use room temperature butter for the best dough consistency.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
