Ingredients
Scale
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk (more as needed)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp salt
Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
Add powdered sugar one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
Mix in the vanilla extract and salt.
Gradually add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
If desired, divide frosting into bowls and tint with food coloring.
Spread onto cooled sugar cookies or pipe using a piping bag.
Notes
Use less milk for a thicker frosting that holds shape for piping.
Let decorated cookies sit uncovered for a few hours for the frosting to set.
Store any leftover frosting in the refrigerator for up to a week.
