This sugar cookie frosting is smooth, creamy, and perfect for decorating. It sets up beautifully for stacking and packaging while remaining soft enough to bite into.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (more as needed)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Mix in the vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Gradually add milk, one tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  5. If desired, divide frosting into bowls and tint with food coloring.
  6. Spread onto cooled sugar cookies or pipe using a piping bag.

Notes

  • Use less milk for a thicker frosting that holds shape for piping.
  • Let decorated cookies sit uncovered for a few hours for the frosting to set.
  • Store any leftover frosting in the refrigerator for up to a week.
